Fall 2020 Meeting Notes

Thank you to all who attended last month’s meeting – it was great to see you all and catch up! If you were unable to attend, here is a brief recap of what was discussed:

Local Updates:

The Town Supervisor, Maureen Fleming, has informed us that our community is not a formal Property Owners Association but instead a Special Park District. The regulations governing our park district can be found here.

If you have any comments, complaints, or recommendations for our community (e.g., potholes to be filled), please submit your emails to the Kent Town Clerk, Lana Cappelli, at lcappelli@townofkentny.gov. These emails will be maintained in a formal Lake Tibet file and issues will be addressed by the Town of Kent, if appropriate. You can also include the Lake Tibet Advisory Committee on your emails if you’d like (laketibetny@gmail.com).

 Lake Assessment Activities:

Our subcontractor, Northeast Aquatic Research, has performed water quality sampling and a drone survey to generate a more-detailed map of the aquatic vegetation. We anticipate receiving NEAR’s 2020 report in the coming months.

In the summer of 2020, volunteers from the Lake Tibet Advisory Committee participated in the NYS Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program. This involvement included robust training sessions and the collection of multiple rounds of water quality sampling. The water samples were submitted to a NYS-certified laboratory for analysis for the evaluation of water quality in Lake Tibet.

These lake assessment activities will help us make more informed decisions regarding lake management going forward.

Lake Management Activities:

The Lake Tibet Advisory Committee has submitted a permit application to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for hydro-raking. The permit review process appears to be going smoothly and we anticipate receiving the approved permit in the next few weeks. If approved by the NYSDEC, we will look to perform the hydro-raking in 2021.

The intent of the hydro-raking is to remove the root masses of the lily pads to prevent further growth. Our hydro-raking activities will be focused on keeping the southeastern portion of the lake clear of aquatic vegetation so that we can preserve some recreational uses and the aesthetics of the deeper portion of the lake and improve water quality.

Southeastern Corner Beautification Project:

The Lake Tibet Advisory Committee is working closely with the NYSDEC to complete a beautification project on the southeastern corner of Lake Tibet (at the eastern intersection of Tibet Drive and Pudding Street). This project will include the plantings of shrubs and grass seed and a new bench to be installed so that our residents can sit and enjoy the beauty of the lake.

2021 Budget:

The budget for 2021 is set at $15,000. The Town of Kent collects the funding for the lake as part of the Town taxes. More information regarding past budgets can be found here.

Community Cleanup Day – October 17:

Please join us on Saturday, October 17th at the Lake Tibet Beach at 10:00 to participate in the community clean up day. Come, meet your neighbors, catch up with friends, and help to keep our community beautiful. Rain date is set for October 18th. Hope to see you there!

·        Open Discussion:

A resident recommended the installation of a community kiosk-type board that would allow residents to post updates on community events. The Lake Tibet Advisory Committee will discuss and evaluate this potential project and will provide an update at the next community meeting.

If you would like lake updates emailed directly to you, please subscribe by adding your email to the “Follow by Email” section of this webpage. And as always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email the Advisory Committee at laketibetny@gmail.com.

Thank you!
